Substance Designer Materials

Fruit pie - New and Decayed

My third project for the Real-Time Materials and Shaders class (GAME 722) at SCAD focused on organic materials and how they decay over time. I created a realistic fruit tart and showcased its transformation from fresh to spoiled. Each material was made in Substance 3D Designer, modeled in 3ds Max, unwrapped in Maya, and rendered in Unreal Engine 5.Materials Created: Kiwi, Strawberry (whole & sliced), Blackberry, Mint leaf, Edible flower, Custard, Tart base. This project explores texture storytelling—highlighting changes like fruit bruising, mold growth, color dulling, and crust softening as time passes. Rendered in real-time with UE5.

The Aftermath - New and Decayed

This is my second project for the Real-Time Materials and Shaders class (GAME 722) at SCAD. The assignment focused on creating man-made materials based on real-world references from my own home. All materials were made in Substance 3D Designer, modified in substance painter for the decayed version, and rendered in Unreal Engine 5 with real-time lighting.
The materials include:

Each material was created with attention to form, texture, and how light interacts with its surface. All references were sourced from everyday items in my home to practice realistic replication.
Scene Concept:
In the pristine version, we see a seemingly normal domestic setup. The two cups suggest company—perhaps a guest or a partner. But in the decayed version, the environment shifts. Blood trails and subtle signs of struggle hint at the unseen crime. The worn-down materials reflect time passed since the act, and the absence of a body implies the perfect getaway.

Stylized Real-Time Materials

This is my first project for the Real-Time Materials and Shaders class (GAME 722) at SCAD. I created three game-ready materials using Substance 3D Designer and rendered them in Unreal Engine 5. The focus was on learning the program itself, using different nodes, and achieving a distinct look using references in real time.

  • Corn – Layered kernels with subtle gloss and organic variation

  • Knitted Wool – Soft, cozy loops with depth and texture

  • Tiles – Clean ceramic tiles with detailed grout and light surface wear

Rendered in real-time using Unreal Engine. Feedback is welcome!
